Dave Grohl wanted to “surprise” people with Them Crooked Vultures.

Filed under: Music — admin @ 10:19 am

The rocker – who recently formed the new supergroup with Queens Of The Stone Age guitarist Josh Homme and Led Zeppelin bassist John Paul Jones – was deliberately secretive about the musical project because he knew expectation was high.
He said: “People had serious expectations but no clue what the band actually sounded like. So it only made sense to take everyone by surprise and go stealth.”
Over the summer, the 40-year-old rocker spent several weeks making music with his new bandmates while he continued to sing for the Foo Fighters.
Dave admits he learned a lot from working with two bands at once.
He explained to Britain’s The Scotsman newspaper: “It’s a good example of all the lessons I’ve learned. I know what it’s like to be a drummer and what it’s like to be a lead singer, what it is to sit down and shut up and what it is to make 80,000 people stand up and sing.”
Despite this recent hype, the rocker is determined to keep fans interested with new material.
He said: “I wouldn’t want the nostalgia to ever keep me from coming up with something new. I definitely look ahead more than I count trophies.”

The Strokes plan to record a new album in January.

The ‘Juicebox’ rockers – who released their last album, ‘First Impressions of Earth’ in 2006 – are preparing to start work on an upcoming LP in the New Year and have already begun searching for a recording studio with their manager Ryan Gentles.
Bassist Nikolai Fraiture wrote on his Twitter page: “While the guys are in LA, I went to scout some studios in NYC with Ryan today for what looks like Jan recording!!! mood = f***ing excited.(sic)”
However, lead singer Julian Casablancas admits the plans haven’t been finalised because the band – also consisting of guitarists Nick Valensi and Albert Hammond Jr. and drummer Fabrizio Moretti – find it “tough” to put time aside for work.
He told Pitchfork.com: “We’re supposed to get back together in January but don’t hold me to that.
“We’ve been trying to do it for years. I’m always available and they know that but getting together is tough.”
Before ‘First Impressions of Earth’, the band released ‘Room on Fire’ in 2003. This was preceded by their award-winning debut LP ‘Is This It’.

Florence And The Machine will record a new album in January.

Filed under: Music — admin @ 10:18 am

The British band – fronted by flame-haired singer Florence Welch – plan to return to the recording studios in the New Year to work on the follow-up to their highly-regarded debut album ‘Lungs’.
Florence said: “We’re recording the second album in January. Got the plan, I just want to start recording as soon as possible.”
Despite her quick rise to fame, the 23-year-old singer claims she hasn’t changed and is still as poor as she was when she was at college.
She told BBC Newsbeat: “I’m basically the same and everyone’s like, ‘Aren’t you supposed to be some loaded pop star?’ and I’m like, ‘No, trust me I’m not, I get an allowance’.
“Life hasn’t changed. I still get the bus. I have no cash cards so I’m pretty much broke and borrowing money still. My phone’s broken, I’m still exactly the same.
“Sometimes I get scared by the exposure, scared by negative criticism but it’s something you learn to deal with and take it less personally.”

Lady Gaga planned to “bleed to death” on stage.

Filed under: Music — admin @ 10:17 am

The ‘Poker Face’ singer – who sang at the MTV Video Music Awards at New York’s Radio City Music Hall on September 13 – wanted to give a bloodied, gruesome performance because it was her “vision” to replicate her death in front of an audience.
She told MTV News: “For my MTV performance, I still keep learning about what I was trying to say. I just knew I had to bleed to death for four minutes on TV, and I remember telling MTV, and they were really quiet on the other end of the line. And it was silent, and then they said, ‘OK, Gaga, we’re going to make it happen. If that’s your vision, were going to do it.’ ”
During the ceremony, the outspoken songstress wore a white outfit covered in fake blood.
Lady Gaga claims she also wanted to highlight the demise of tragic celebrities and show people how she expects to die.
She explained: “I wanted to say something about how the celebrity sort of has this inevitable demise that we love to watch. But are we killing them or are they killing themselves?
“I also remembered my obsession with young women when I was younger that died. Beautiful young actresses and poets. Marilyn Monroe, Judy Garland and Sylvia Plath, these young women that died that we never saw their death. We see the deaths of these other women, but we don’t see their death. So I think I wanted to show that, and in my showing that, if you’re wondering what I’m going to look like when I die, here it is.”

Jamie T is to start a covers band with his friends.

Filed under: Music — admin @ 10:17 am

The British singer – who kicks off his rescheduled tour next month after postponing it because he was ill with laryngitis – plans to get together with two of his childhood pals and perform as a covers group so he can have a break from writing music.
He told BBC 6Music: “I seem to spend a lot of time talking about starting a covers band at the moment, which I’m thinking of doing with a couple of friends. We’ve done a lot of music over the past year, we’ve written a lot and I think we are coming to the end of a phase of that I suppose.
“Maybe it’s time to stop writing for a bit as strange as that sounds sometimes you need to collect your thoughts a bit before writing so I think a covers band might be fun.
“They’re all mates that love music at the moment, just close friends of mine.”
However, the 23-year-old ‘Sticks ’n’ Stones’ singer  doesn’t expect to record with the new group but hopes to perform several “fun” live shows.
He explained: “I think we’re just going to play some shows. I think it’s just more for the sake of having fun and going out and playing it. I don’t think anyone’s got any ideas that big about recording them.”
Jamie was forced to postpone his 2009 shows after he fell unwell during the Australian leg of his tour in September.

Iggy Pop is to record a host of ‘lost’ Stooges songs.

Filed under: Music — admin @ 11:10 am

The legendary singer has recently reconciled with Iggy and the Stooges guitarist James Williamson and the pair are keen to record songs they wrote together in the early 70s but never got the opportunity to record.
Iggy told BANG showbiz: “James Williamson is really hot to trot and there’s a lot of old stuff that The Stooges failed to record. We wrote a load of songs that we only ever played live, so I’m looking forward to doing some studio recordings.”
He also said the group, who had previously played with original guitarist Ron Asheton until his death last year, will embark on full scale touring next year.
Iggy, 62, was last week given the Living Legend award at the Marshall Classic Rock Roll of Honour awards in London, where he admitted he is now part of the ‘classic’ rock genre.
He said: “I snuck in first, it started about ten years ago, and The Stooges are knocking on the door now. They’re putting us in in-flight magazines and what have you, so we kinda bum rushed the thing and, I guess, here we are.”

Black Sabbath guitarist Tony Iommi doesn’t reckon he’ll ever run out of riffs.

Filed under: Music — admin @ 11:09 am

The legendary guitarist said he has a huge stockpile of ideas which he’s been saving up over the years, but he doesn’t reckon he’s likely to need to break into them.
He said to BANG showbiz: “I’ve got plenty in stock but I never get back to them. I always write new stuff. I have got riffs and ideas in my home studio that I’ve not even listened to yet.
“I find that by the time I’m ready to go back to them I’ve already written something else. If I ever get stuck, I will - but by now, you know, I’ve been going for a few years.”
Iommi – now playing in Heaven and Hell, a group made up of himself and Black Sabbath bassist Geezer Butler, alongside ex-Black Sabbath members Ronnie James Dio and Vinny Appice – also said his favourite riffs are the ones he wrote on the early Black Sabbath albums in the early 70s.
Speaking at the Marshall Classic Rock Roll of Honour awards last week, he added: “I like the early stuff, basic riffs, and I also like ‘Sabbath Bloody Sabbath’, I think that was real landmark.”

Steven Tyler isn’t quitting Aerosmith.

Filed under: Music — admin @ 11:08 am

Despite the band announcing they were looking for a new lead singer Tyler made a surprise appearance at Perry’s solo concert in New York on Tuesday (10.11.09) to assure he is still in the band.
Tyler said: “I just want New York to know, I am not leaving Aerosmith.
“Joe Perry, you are a man of many colours. But I, mother*****r, am the rainbow!”
Rumours Steven had quit began to circulate after the singer told a reporter he was going to focus on “Brand Tyler” earlier this month.
Just two days ago (09.11.09), Perry wrote on twitter: “Aerosmith is positively looking for a new singer to work with. You just can’t take 40 years of experience and throw it in the bin.
“Band is playing hotter than ever and our songs need to be played live! Don’t despair; Aerosmith not splitting up. Promise that’s the last you’ll hear from me on the subject till we gear up again.(sic)”
Perry also revealed there is an album’s worth of new Aerosmith material awaiting Tyler’s input and vocals.

Jarvis Cocker says Pulp could reform soon.

Filed under: Music — admin @ 11:07 am

The ‘Disco 2000’ singer said he was prompted to consider a reunion of the iconic Britpop band after mistaken reports they would reform to play Glastonbury.
He said: “I got asked about Glastonbury and someone said, ‘Would I like to play there again?’ I said ‘Yes’ but I think people interpreted that as, ‘I would like Pulp to play Glastonbury again.’ ”
“I suppose it made me think a little bit. The fact that people did seem interested, that made me think about it a little bit more.”
Pulp formed in 1978 but went on hiatus after releasing their album, ‘We Love Life’ in 2001.
Jarvis, 46, took a career break when his son, Albert, was born in 2003, but went onto solo success with 2006’s ‘Jarvis’ and ‘Further Complications’, which was released this summer.
Earlier this year, the singer and songwriter described himself as a “contrary s*d” who “tended not to do” what people wanted him to.

Serge Pizzorno believes rock and roll is dying out.

Filed under: Music — admin @ 11:07 am

The Kasabian rocker bemoaned the state of the British music industry, insisting his group and the Arctic Monkeys are the only “proper” rock bands left after the split of Oasis earlier this year.
He said: “We never actually said we were the biggest band in the UK but what we did say is that now, with Oasis splitting up, there aren’t many proper rock n roll bands left. Can you name one?
“There are only us and the Arctic Monkeys. All the rest of them have released s**t albums or didn’t care enough in the first place.”
The ‘Fire’ hitmakers are currently on their biggest UK tour to date but Serge insists they aren’t intimidated by the size of the crowds.
He added: “I’m not scared at all about playing arenas but it’s a difficult thing – you’ve got to be careful. They’re big buildings so you’ve got to put on a show but also keep the vibe going.
“I think it gives us more of a chance to do everything bigger – make it a real psychedelic trip. It will be a beautiful show.”
